TAKE PART IN
NANOWRIMO
-
NATIONAL NOVEL-WRITING
MONTH!
Newbie scribblers and seasoned novelists alike benefit from the month of November, when they sit
down to a literary marathon known as NaNoWriMo. Their goal - to write 50,000 words in 30 days!
That's 1,500 words a day, without fail!  Sure, lots of it will be crap, but crap is GOOD. Because if
you write long enough, somewhere amongst the crap is always gold.

(Check out my blog post on this subject at
http://waypastnormal.blogspot.com/2011/11/nanowrimo-is-like-broccoli.html)

If you want to improve as a writer, this is the BEST thing you can do. Go to their website at
http://www.nanowrimo.org/ and check out all the details, including tips and many cool things.

But do you understand HOW?
Read the myths and the facts
about e-piracy by
author JEANIENE FROST

1. If you're writing fiction, finish your manuscript before you submit it.

2.
IF you are seeking the traditional publishing route, you will probably need to
create a query letter and a synopsis of the story for submission to an
agent. Most NY
publishers do not accept submissions directly from an author.
NOTE - Writer's Digest
magazine is one of the BEST sources for information on all aspects of getting
published.
Not only does it have great articles in a monthly publication, it also has terrific
free sources on its website as well as an entire library of books about writing that you can
purchase. (No, I don't work for Writer's Digest -- it really IS the best!)

3. The best advice I ever got was
"Real writers write". They don't spend all their time
talking about writing, or getting ready to write, they actually spend time DOING IT. Every
day. Period. It is not easy, especially if you're like most of us and have families and jobs
and school and other responsibilities. But the only way to become a good writer is to write.
And the only way to become a published writer is to finish a project.

4. The second best advice I ever got was
"Write because you love to write, because
you have to write. Don't write for the paycheck because it's not enough."
Even if
writers were paid well, it wouldn't be enough if you divided it between all the hours you're
going to put in --- and it's not just writing you have to do. There's submitting, editing and
marketing. Most of us will
spend as much time marketing our work as creating it!

5. You can decide to self-publish. This is no longer a last-ditch route for authors who
can't get the attention of a publisher. Some well-known authors are choosing this too, and
they're turning down traditional book deals to do it! Just another example of how the
publishing industry is changing!
You can release your work as an ebook or as a POD
(print-on-demand) paperback or both.
There are several reputable websites that can
help you to self-publish in either form. Amazon's "Create Space" and Lulu are popular. If
you just want an ebook, Smashwords is rapidly topping the list. Apple is now getting into
the act and more are following. In other words, opportunities abound!

Remember, marketing is even MORE important if you're self-published! And by the way, if
you happen to sell enough,
bigger opportunities just might come knocking on your
door. Publishers and agents have learned that there's a LOT of good stories out there in
self-pub land, and they're paying attention.

But in the name of all that's holy,
get your work edited! And not just by your BFF.
Readers have caught on that there's a lot of poorly written books chock FULL of mistakes
being self-pubbed too. Don't think they won't care - they will. Only put the very best
product that you possibly can out there.

6. Final writer's tip - you're going to need a bigger coffeemaker. Really. Oh wait, that's just
me.
